Tahir Javed Initiates Visit Of US Congress Members To Flood-Ravaged Pakistan

The monsoon season this year in Pakistan has been nothing short of a devastation. The torrential rains in the provinces of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Southern Punjab triggered flash floods which have wreaked havoc in the country.

More than 33 million people have been affected as the floods submerged one –third of the nation. As the government of Pakistan declared a national emergency in the country, several members of the international community reached out with flood relief funds and aid to help those affected by the floods.

Mr. Tahir Javed, a Pakistani origin businessman, philanthropist and Democrat leader, initiated the visit of a delegation of US Congress members. The purpose behind the visit was to assess the on-ground situation of the flood victims.

The delegation was led by congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and comprised of Thomas Suozzi as well as congressman Alexander Green. The delegation visited Sindh’s Dadu district to survey the devastation caused by the floods. Congresswoman Sheila stated that this was the “first US delegation to visit the most devastating and deadly flooding in Pakistani history”, deeming the inundation a “flood of historic proportion”.

“As far as the eye could see, I saw water,” she added

During the visit, Mr. Tahir Javed, accompanied the delegation for the survey of the flood hit areas. The delegation was briefed by military rescuers; however, they also personally
met the people affected, and listened to the men and women who had been left homeless due to the raging waters.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Tahir Javed said that after assessing the devastation caused by the floods in Pakistan, he will be pressing the US government to increase the aid amount for Pakistan. Earlier Mr. Tahir Javed had also taken to his Twitter handle to bring the attention of the world to the damages caused by the floods in Pakistan.

“Pakistan is dealing with a climate-induced humanitarian disaster of epic proportion. 1000,s have died & millions displaced. The world needs to step up & help Pakistan by providing relief since it has limited resources at its disposal,” he wrote.

In a social media post, Thomas Suozzi also urged the masses to keep Pakistani people in prayers and stay tuned, saying he will report back over the next few days
